About Our Program

Fruitport Alternative High School is a program designed for students who have not succeeded in the regular high school environment for reasons such as truancy, low academic performance, and being uncomfortable in a larger social setting. The staff at the Alternative High School offers courses similar to those at the high school. They include such academics as math, English, social studies, science, and psychology, as well as, art. These courses are offered in a much smaller environment and class size.

The program has developed several strategies to assist in the success of all our students. The staff believes in involving the parents/guardians in their child’s success. An essential tool is open and frequent communication between school and home. The Alternative High School schedules regular parent/ teacher conferences and personally invites all families to attend. Many other parent/staff meetings are held throughout the year on an as needed basis.

Communication is also provided through mailing progress reports every three weeks that list the current grades and missing assignments. Getting this information out helps build a support system between the school and the home to achieve consistency. To ensure good attendance our facility remains a closed campus. Students are kept at the school throughout the day during school hours, including their breaks and lunchtime.

Students who attend the Alternative High School have some of the same opportunities for school involvement as those who attend the regular high school. Alternative students can participate in sports, clubs, and any other extra-curricular activities as long as they meet the academic requirements. Alternative students can attend sporting events, dances, and all school functions.

The Alternative High School program has been an integral part of Fruitport Community Schools for 30 years. We are dedicated to providing a learning environment in which each student has the opportunity to succeed academically and grow into responsible adults.
