I’m pleased and proud to welcome you to the Edgewood Elementary home page of the Fruitport Community Schools website.  It is the mission of Edgewood to provide the time and opportunity for all students to learn!  Working together with families, staff, community, and of course the students we continue to meet this goal!

Edgewood is the largest of the three Fruitport elementary schools.  We provide our 600 students a safe and welcoming environment to expand their learning.  We believe that a child must first feel safe and cared for before they can learn.  As a building, we live and promote the slogan…Edgewood R.O.C.K.S.   The students and staff focus on Respect, Outstanding attitude, Care, Keep being responsible, and Safety First!

Along with safety, Edgewood has a strong focus on academics.  As a staff, we believe we must meet the child where they are at.  Our teachers differentiate in the classroom by using Readers Workshop and Writers Workshop.  Students within the same classroom read at a variety of reading levels and are continually challenged to grow as readers and writers.  In math, our staff is working collaboratively to make sure the children have a solid understanding of math concepts and not just an understanding of the process to complete the math problem.   By implementing math workshops, math talks, and guided math we continue to see students understanding of math improve.   As a staff, we are focusing on creating real-world problems that involve problem-solving, critical thinking, and reasoning.  We are proud to offer activities beyond the traditional classroom.  Our students visit local businesses, museums, parks, and other educational settings for field trips to experience what they are learning about first hand.  We believe it is our responsibility to prepare the children for the collaborative society that we are becoming.

Fruitport supports the belief that the whole child must be developed.  We are fortunate to provide all of our elementary students’ physical education, vocal music, and visual arts weekly.  Student’s artwork is displayed proudly in the classrooms and hallways.  The children showcase their vocal talents during a holiday and Spring program.  In physical education, the students complete the Fitness Gram and set goals for improving their health and physical fitness.

Edgewood has a full-time counselor that provides classroom instruction along with small group and individual counseling.  Some of the programs run by our counselor are; Fifth Grade Mentor Program, Social Skills Groups, Chester the Cool Cat program, Student Leadership Program, and other programs that are run on an as-needed basis.

The staff in cooperation with the PTO provides a variety of family events throughout the year.  We are proud to provide many events at a family friendly cost.  Family Fun Night is always a favorite and every child leaves with a prize!  The girls in 2nd and 3rd grade enjoy the Father/Daughter dance as well as the boys in 2nd and 3rd grade who enjoy an event with their mom.  Our first-grade students enjoy Muffins with Mom and Donuts with Dad during the fall months.  Other events include; Winter Splash, Bedtime Stories, Boo Bash, and the Family Tailgate.   We are looking forward to providing these events and expanding in the upcoming years.  Our PTO is always looking for new ideas and volunteers who want to help with providing these fun events!

Together as a community of teachers, students, and families, our goal is always the safety, education, and well-being of the children.  I am proud to be part of such a caring and supporting district and believe you would be happy to be part of our family.
